Patrick Sercu in the 1977 Skol 6
Held from 16 to 21-Sep-1977 (no race in 1976)
“THROUGHOUT THIS YEAR of Jubilee we have been looking forward to our own celebration ... the 10th Anniversary of the SKOL 6. We have tried to bring together the most attractive field of indoor track specialists so far seen at Wembley and at the same time freshen the programme with a sprinkling of new professionals. Our old favourite and six times SKOL 6 winner, Patrick Sercu chooses Rene Pijnen to try for a repeat of their 1974 win and Tony Gowland with Gunter Haritz have the aggressive talents to upset their plans. But who would dare forecast the result when teams of the calibre of Allan / Clark, Peffgen / Fritz and Ritter / Frank need a London win to establish high contract fees for the coming European events? On Monday night we have a special bonus for fans when Eddy Merckx meets Didi Thurau in a four-event match. The goal of any professional cyclist is to win one of the great road classics, Eddy has won 32! - his five Tour de France wins, four world championships and the fact that he has ridden further than any other man in one hour stamps his greatness. It will be interesting to see if his opponent on Monday night will, in the coming years, rise to the standards he has set. Construction work on the floor of the Empire Pool prevented us from promoting SKOL 6 in 1976 - a disappointing break in continuity, but here we are back again with our effervescent cocktail of Sport and Show. We hope you enjoy every minute of the racing and look forward to seeing you back again next year.” Ron Webb, Skol 6 Organiser
