BICYCLE CONTEST AT HULL Daily Gazette (Middlesbrough, England) Monday, 22-Dec-1879

“A six days’ bicycle contest (fourteen hours per day), in which the competitors are G. Waller, long distance champion; J. C. Mercer, champion of South Wales; and B. Keen, J. Nicholls, and R. Patrick, all winners of handicaps, was commenced in Hull this (Monday) morning a few minutes after ten o’clock. At noon the respective distances accomplished by each was Waller, 32 miles 2 lpas; Phillips, 32 miles 1 lap; Keen, 32 miles 2 laps; Nicholls, 32 miles 2 laps; Mercer 30 miles 15 laps; Patrick, 32 miles 2 laps; Shaw, 30 miles 2 laps. Seventeen laps are reckoned two miles.”
This reports makes the track size to be 207 yards (17 laps = 2x1,760 = 3,520 yds) or 189.3 metres per lap.

“At noon to-day (Wednesday) the repective distances travelled were:- Waller, 376 miles 9 laps; Patrick, 370 miles 8 laps; Mercer, 360 miles 7 laps; Phillips (resting), 344 miles 3 laps; Nicholls, 320 miles 7 laps; Keen, 214 miles 6 laps.”

“The distances travelled at noon to-day (Friday) were:- Waller, 642 miles 1 laps; Patrick, 632 miles; Phillips, 622 miles; Nicholls, 510 miles. Keen and Mercer have not ridden since Wednesday night.”
